Utopia in the Community

Utopia Project CIC is based on the Wirral and we depend upon external funding in order to provide opportunities for a range of different groups within our community. We therefore welcome any kind of support or networking opportunities. Utopia Support Grow Sow Well Community Garden

Young people from Utopia have continued to lend their support to worthwhile local community groups by helping transform a community garden in Rock Ferry. Workning in partnership with local Community Project Grow Sow Well, many of the young people had the opportunity to turn their hand to gardening by landscping the area and planting various trees. They are now seeing their hard work come to fruition as the trees begin to flourish. Check out the radio report below and this article extract from the Wirral News

Utopia Makeover for Local Kennels

Utopia Project spent the 3 weeks in March giving their local Kennels some much needed renovation. As part of their City & Guilds qualification, all young people on the course had been asked to complete a worthwhile community project. The group of students decided to offer their support to local charity ‘Friends Of Birkenhead Kennels’ after hearing that the Kennels was in desperate need of a makeover. Over the course of the project young people discussed with the team at the Kennels what was required and then went about planning it; phoning around local trade suppliers to source materials and organising days and times to undertake the work.

Sam Simpson (Kennels Manager) said "The guys from Utopia have done a fantastic job and have made the kennels look more welcoming.  It was great to see so many enthusiastic young people really getting stuck in. The kennels look fabulous and we would like to thank everyone involved."

The renovations included; painting and decorating office space, exterior walls and external and internal kennels. However the most impressive part of the project was a Graffiti mural on an old container at the site. Thanks to funding from the Peel Ports and Community Foundation for Merseyside, the young people worked with a tutor from ‘Zap Graffiti’ to create an eye-catching piece of art that now welcomes all visitors to the centre in the main yard.

Over 15 young people took part in the project and Chris Black (Head of Centre at Utopia) said “We are really proud of everyone who took part. It was great to see our students developing new skills, whilst also making a contribution to their local community. It is very important to the personal development aspects of our programme, that young people have the opportunities to help others and feel good about themselves.”
